Eighteen days through America's greatest landscape run — Santa Fe's adobe Plaza, the Grand Canyon from a rim-side lodge, sunrise over Monument Valley, three full days in Moab's red rock country, the hoodoos of Bryce, and the canyon floor of Zion — then home along Route 66 through its great restored railroad hotels. Seven national parks and monuments without a single brutal day behind the wheel.
Every stay is a historic inn or national park lodge — La Fonda, El Tovar, the Bryce and Zion lodges, the Harvey House La Posada — no big-box resorts. Dining leans New Mexican and trading-post casual with a few destination rooms. Activities emphasize rim walks, short iconic hikes, scenic byways, and dark-sky stargazing.

The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum is one of the most moving sites in the country — the Field of Empty Chairs and the Survivor Tree. Allow two hours.

Flat Texas Panhandle gives way to New Mexico high desert — watch the horizon grow mountains as you climb toward 7,000 feet. This is the one day that touches the 7.5-hour limit; everything after is shorter.

Palace of the Governors (Native artisans sell under the portal), San Miguel Chapel (oldest church in the US), then Canyon Road — half a mile of adobe galleries.
Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, or Meow Wolf if you want the weird side of Santa Fe. Dinner at The Shed (James Beard classic, book ahead) — red chile enchiladas worth the trip alone.

Entering from the east means Desert View Watchtower and a half-dozen rim overlooks are the welcome mat — the canyon reveals itself in stages as you drive the 25 miles to the Village.

Walk the flat Rim Trail west from the Village, hopping the Hermit Road shuttle between overlooks — Hopi Point and Mohave Point are the standouts. April means mild temps and thinner crowds.
Geology museum at Yavapai, a toe dipped below the rim on Bright Angel Trail if you're feeling it (go down 30 minutes max — the climb back doubles it). Dinner in the El Tovar Dining Room on the rim.

Stop at the Cameron Trading Post (1916) for lunch and Navajo rugs. The buttes start rising out of the desert an hour before you arrive.
Book the guided Lower Valley jeep tour (~$90/person) — guides take you past the restricted-access arches and tell the stories. Then sunset over the Mittens from your own balcony; every room faces them.
2.5 hrs driving Day 8 Tue–Thu, Apr 27–29 · US-163/US-191 N (~150 mi), then day trips

Photo stop at Forrest Gump Point outside Mexican Hat, lunch in Moab, then an afternoon first taste of Arches: Park Avenue, Balanced Rock, and the Windows section.
Devils Garden and Landscape Arch in the morning cool, then the Delicate Arch hike (3 mi round trip) timed for golden evening light. April 2027 will likely need a timed-entry reservation — book when they open.
Island in the Sky district: Mesa Arch, Grand View Point. Dead Horse Point State Park for the gooseneck-bend sunset — the view that out-Grand-Canyons the Grand Canyon.
5 hrs driving, spread across the day Fri, Apr 30 · UT-24 & Scenic Byway 12 (~270 mi)

UT-24 runs straight through Capitol Reef — stop for the Fruita orchards and pie at the Gifford House. Then Scenic Byway 12: over Boulder Mountain, along the Hogback ridge with thousand-foot drops both sides, through Escalante. This is the Smugglers' Notch of the Southwest, times ten.
First look at the hoodoos glowing at Sunset Point, dinner at the lodge.
1.5 hrs driving Sat, May 1 · UT-12 & US-89 through the Mt Carmel Tunnel (~75 mi)
🕕 Sunrise at Sunrise Point · Hike by 7:30 AM · Depart ~noon · Zion by ~2:00 PM
Sunrise turns the amphitheater orange-pink, then the Queens Garden / Navajo Loop combo (3 mi) gets you down inside it — the best short hike in Utah.
Red Canyon, then the Zion–Mt Carmel Tunnel: you emerge from a mile of rock into the canyon's full scale. Evening shuttle up Zion Canyon for orientation and a first walk along the Virgin River.

Ride to the last stop and walk the paved Riverside Walk; wade into the start of the Narrows as far as feels right (outfitters in Springdale rent waders — May water is cold but the spring flow usually permits entry; check conditions).
Emerald Pools or the Grotto, lawn time at the lodge, and the Canyon Overlook Trail (1 mi, just past the tunnel) for sunset over the switchbacks.

The return leg starts with a bonus: Horseshoe Bend outside Page — the 1.5-mile round-trip walk to the rim of the Colorado's most famous curve.
Winslow, Arizona — yes, that corner; the photo is mandatory. Dinner in the Turquoise Room, one of the great railroad-hotel dining rooms.

The park road connects directly to I-40 — an hour's detour through the Painted Desert and 225-million-year-old logs without really leaving the route.
Spray-paint a Cadillac at Cadillac Ranch (bring a can), then steak at the Big Texan if you're feeling theatrical.

The shortest transfer of the return — time for a Palo Duro Canyon detour on the way out of Amarillo (the "Texas Grand Canyon," 30 min off route) or an unhurried OKC afternoon.
Back at the Colcord — known territory from the way out. Bricktown or Paseo Arts District for dinner.

Last big drive, rewarded properly: the Peabody ducks march from the fountain to the elevator at 5 PM sharp, a tradition since 1933.
Dry-rub ribs at Charlie Vergos' Rendezvous (in the alley across from the hotel) or a Beale Street wander.
